Why Trinity keeps us busy

Every working week we are somewhere in Trinity, often within a short walk of Trinity Crescent and Newhaven Harbour. The building stock here has its own character, and the ground beneath it has its own habits. Knowing both is the difference between a fix that lasts and a repair you have to revisit.

Trinity's seaside villas were built on a mix of stiff boulder clay and softer marine deposits towards the shore. Buildings nearer the harbour edge are most exposed to ground-moisture changes from the Forth.

A crack runs from a window head up through three or four courses of stone. You have filled it twice and it has come back twice. Surface fillers do nothing structural. The wall keeps trying to move where it is weakest, the crack reopens, and water finds the cavity. Frost cycles widen the gap from inside.

Stitch the masonry. Stainless helical bars bonded into raked bed joints turn a single fault line into a reinforced zone. The wall behaves as one piece again, and the repointing is colour-matched so the work disappears.
